Oh, hello there[edit | edit source]

If you want to say hi to me, enter the Discussion tab, please. Rather than providing information about me, this page is more like a dump of various bits of information. A hot mess of all things interesting.

About perfumer's alcohol, perfume oils, fixatives, solvents...[edit | edit source]

Source: various sources, for example perfumers David Ruskin and Chris Bartlett, both active at Basenotes.net forum.

  • Do not add water. That's the rule no.1 of making fragrance sprays.
  • "Perfumer's alcohol" is 95% alcohol, with denaturant added to it.
  • Denaturant is added to make the alcohol not fit to drink. This is purely for tax purposes, and has nothing to do with helping make a perfume.
  • Alcohol in perfumes in Muslim countries is denaturated to make it ḥalāl. However, this might be done just to stay on the "safe side", because some sources suggest that alcohol can be used by Muslim when it's used topically/externally only, thus it shouldn't need to be denaturated.
  • Denaturing 95% or 100% ethyl alcohol, to make it "Perfumer's Alcohol", doesn't make fragrance last longer nor project more. (== has nothing to do with helping make a perfume)
  • To make the perfume last longer, one needs to add some fixatives, which are part of the perfume (== not part of the alcohol).
  • The ingredient that allows oils to blend is a solvent, which is also part of the perfume (alcohol also allows oils to blend).
  • Solvents do not work as fixatives.
